Post subject:  RPG Websites...

Just wondering if any of you forum trolls here know of any good RPG sites?

Whether that be for world design, RPG design, dungeon design, etc. Any and all would be appreciated!

While I'm lacking in maintaining the links on the main page there is a couple there with some resources you might want to look at.

Sounds great, I'll take a look.

As well, if anyone else knows of any, go ahead and post. Don't be shy. 8)

What is it you are looking for?

2D RPGs? 3D RPGs? MUDs? MMOs? Want to make one? Want to find a free one? Looking for inspiration?

Gamesutra used to be great for finding information on game development.

To find engines for driving them is easy, just type "Free game engine" into google and check them out, there are hundreds of engines already floating around.

The engine is 50% of the work, so if you can build off someone elses code or at least use it as a guide to make your own then your already half way done. The next 40% is graphics which are very time consuming and take more work than coding the engine. The rest is fixing bugs and scripts which fleshes it out for end use.

Syd: Well, I guess I'm looking for inspiration. :P

Dev Viper: I didn't say that I was going to code anything, dunno why you assumed. :P But at least you've given me an idea.

Of course I could use Google, but I was just wondering if you guys know of any sites off hand.

Gamedev.net and flipcode.net have always been places I like to go. For AI, go to ai-depot.com, and for OpenGL, try nehe.gamedev.net. None have much specifically geared towards RPGs, though I am sure you will find some articles about them at gamedev.

Anyway, yeah, the engine and the graphics are what kill a project. If it is going to be 2D, then no worries -- rolling a 2D engine should not take more than a day for any programmer worth his salt, and can be done in just about any language out there. Likewise, 2D graphics are very easy to do, if you are aiming for SNES-style 2D RPG, and not UO or Diablo-style. UO/Diablo-ish 2D graphics are probably going to be harder to make than the 3D equivalents when it comes to the animals/monsters/equipment, but the engine will be much easier to write/find/make good. 3D has the benefit of much easier-to-make graphics if you are aiming for anything more advanced than SNES-style, because all of the animations and perspectives are generated nearly automagically. Good 3D graphics, though, are still very hard to find and make compared to the SNES-style stuff. Of course, the 3D variety is going to require dramatically more knowledge to get going, too.

Yeah, it is all very interesting. I enjoy dabbling in this stuff.

Who knows, maybe I'll make some sort of EMU project that isn't related to any game. Just a platform to insert your own graphics and voila.

We used to have lots of Emu's but then the market crashed and we ate them...
