Howdy gang,

Well, I finally decided it was time to leave the emulation scene. It's not getting me anywhere and I'm just plain tired of trying to hack at code or change things from the way they where meant to work.

Oh sure, I'll be around to post on here still. I've got way to many friends around here to just let go!

So you may be asking right now, "Why are you doing this man? You have something better to do?"

Well, yes... yes I do.

I purchased the license to a game engine.

http://www.garagegames.com

It's called Torque.

I've had the license for almost a year now and I havn't done anything with it. I've also owned a business name for a little while now, "BlackRak Studios" and I havn't done anything with that either. I think it's time I did.

What I really want to do is build an MMORPG. It's been my dream for a long time, and I think there are a lot of people on these forums that I would want help/advice from.

So I guess the main reason I posted this was to get your guys support. I'm not asking for your money... please don't get me wrong. I'm asking for your ideas, things you would like to see in a game, etc...

Pretty soon I'll have my website fully developed and functioning the way I want it too.

Whether this project suceeds or falls flat on it's face however, I never want to forget my roots.

Anyway, if anyone wants to help with this pipe up. I'm going to need developers.

Thanks for listening.

Hey man, best of luck on your new endeavor.
I still lurk, even if I don't say much these days.

Playing with EMU's is like a bad case of herpies....you can never leave it, it clings to you and pop's up to remind you of its "Burning" itch to play, modify, create.

The outbreaks grow fewer as the years go by but it will always be there lurking in the background waiting...there is no escape...

I thought about using Torque myself, but I did some research and most of the people I saw who used it didn?t like it. Judging by the demo, it?s dated anyway, except maybe the shader version, which doesn?t really appeal a lot to me anyway. Then there is the whole price thing.

So instead I?ve been developing my own engine. It?s a lot more fun, and you have unlimited control that way. Plus I have some software pros helping me whenever I have a question (several professional game programmers, a VP at a software company, and an executive producer of a very successful game company you all know and love).

My eventual plan is a shooter first (a simple not-innovative-at-all shooter, because they are easy), and then eventually a single-player RPG.

Going down the route of ?MMORPG? is enticing, but way, WAY, WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too many people get laughed off every programming forum in existence for that very notion.

Every programmer and their dog are trying to make an MMORPG.

If you succeed, you?ll be one of the first. :-) So good luck, and I hope you?re smarter (or just far more stubborn) than the other 9 million who have tried!

I wouldn?t mind helping if you need any low-level 3D support, I know the math pretty damn well and am an expert at OpenGL in C++, but I can?t commit to anything.

The Unreal engines were free to use for personal use once upon a time. I personally have the source code from a now out of business game making company from 1999, they used an engine called Golgotha.

You can check it out here if your interested;

http://jonathanclark.com/golgotha/

Was ahead of its time and is still a very awesome force with new openGL and even better is, it doesnt cost a dime :P

Yeah, the CryEngine is pretty sweet. I?ve been learning a lot from it, just by noticing how it reacts when you move around in the world. The way it handles terrain isn?t that revolutionary, but they did such a wonderful job with vegetation. I wasn?t really impressed by any of the indoor stuff, though.

Doom 3 definitely takes the cake for visual accuracy for indoor games. Sure, the game itself is utter crap that I wouldn?t pay a cent to play, but the engine itself is breathtaking as far as indoor quality. The lighting was done very, very well (when there was any, at least in the demo).

There are a few good engines that are better than torque and free to boot, but are a lot harder to turn into a game in a reasonable amount of time.

Well,

We can forget about this idea... It fell flat on it's face. And you're right Dev, I couldn't stay away any longer!

I missed it to much.
