I have been toying with the idea of creating maps based on real Earth regions. I'd like to know if there is any interest in such maps as ....

1. North America... Central Canada to Central Mexico
2. USA, same as above, just as little Can. and Mexico as possible to gain the width of a full 6144 into the landmass - Seattle to Miami, Maine to Sand Diego.
3. East coast USA. (Maine to N. Fla, Mississippi Rvr to Atlantic Ocean - Indian, Colonial and most Civil War areas)
4. Central America (Central Mexico to Northern Brazil - Mayan, Aztec and Inca areas)
5. Scandinavian (Viking areas - N. Europe)
6. U.K. (England/ireland/Scotland)
7. Western Europe (Spain to Poland, UK to N. Africa)
8. Mid East (Libya to Iran)
9. China (Mongol horde areas)
10. Japan (Fuedal Japan style)
11. SE Asia (Korea, Vietnam, Indonesian Islands etc.)

I've tought about that idea myself aswell, but I think it would be a bit.. akward to make a real world map into a game thats based on fantasy. But I have to say, it saves a load of time just to take the shape of your map from somewhere, and using real islands makes the islands look realistic aswell.

I'll post later some screens of my maps that are based on real islands.

Of course you could use existing real world continents and then modify them a bit and put your own spin on them. Some of the original Ultima maps were loosely based on real world continents.

 :o  OMG, I can NOT disagree more.

Doing real world maps can easily fit into the fantasy of UO, Look at any standard mythology of any civilization on Earth.

A UK map would be, by far, the easiest to adapt to UO.
King Arthur, Robin Hood, Merlin, etc. etc. etc.......

Viking, Greek, Arabian, Japanese... All are great for adapting into a UO world using there own myths and legends.

Even the America's .... Indians, Mayan, Aztec, Inca's All have great myths/Legends that could be adapted.

Think a little bit about literature that has been written over the past several thousand years. Heck UO itself wouldn't have every been thought of if it hadn't been for the mythology and legends of those civilizations

A lot of it depends, I think, on the background lore for the shard that a map like this would be used on.

If it's supposed to be set on Earth, or hinted that it is some future or past version of Earth, then a map like this would make sense.

If it's strictly supposed to be a unique setting, then a map of Earth wouldn't make much sense unless it was modified enough to not be immediately recognizable.

Personally I don't know that there will be much of a "market" for them. But hey, never knock a free map. :)

I think the British Isle (Arthurian), Scandavian (Viking) and Mediteranian (Greek Mythology) maps would be the ones actually used.

I happen to have a map I found that appears to be a version of Europe. I think I have the BMP that was made for a version of Dragon. If I can find it I'll get it to you Pollando. As far as I know there was no copyright on it. In fact I may have found it a long time agon on Ryandors site.

this is just a thread for me.
I am working on a european map. Having troubles with the height though. If you want, I can send you mine for a peek. I fit island until bit of northafrica, UK until western russia (kiev, moscow) on my map and left the right side mountains for caves. I am still thinking about filling the right side with a piece more of asia...

Yukiko, could you send me your European one too? I would like to see how it is done!

Thanks a lot!

Lia

I started to do all these maps I mentioned a few months ago.

I grabbed satellite photos from yahoo and google, cropped then and just went at it.

They WILL be freebies for the taking, i'll post them as I go. Basic stuff, you'll have to add your own detail work tho.
