Punt, think you can you add a "General" forum? It would be cool to have a place to post stuff that doesn't directly fall into one of the other forums.

I will have to think about it. To me the categories are there to facilitate retrievial and indexing of data. Clear defined categoris make that easier to prevent filing mistakes (especially when used by more then person, such as "posters").

A "general" category opens up the door to two concerns:

1. Additional possiblity of misfiling between the "general" and any other of the categories.
2. Filing of data that one has to initially question should it be filed here anyway? Is it applicable to the focus of the site, accomplishing the job, etc. For instance, in Worldmaker site, if one isn't discussing map making, structure building, or mul editing, then at this time, what is ONE discussion, and why on this site?

Not oppossed to the concept, just trying to sort out the rational, need, and how it would be used.

A lot of discussion doesn't fall easily into one of the 3 categories. For instance, I didn't really have anywhere I could post a congratulatory message (aside from the shoutbox that is!) :)

General forums that allow some degree of off-topic discussion facilities community development and friendships.

I would hate this site if I could only talk about maps. Of course, you may not be trying to build a community there, outside of technical discussion, but I imagine you will have far fewer "regulars" if they can only ever talk about the technical stuff. Remove the general categories from this site, for example, and I imagine there would be very few if any regular people who would respond to the technical parts, either.

You need a VERY popular site to maintain regulars on an on-topic-only forum, or already have some very devoted people.

Yeah, not a "General" topic forum for tools, to say.. but just for people to pop in and say hello, or post stuff that does not actually relate to tool Q/A. Just makes a forum seem more welcoming.. or something.

I understand the general concept, and how it promotes general comradity. But isn't that what some of the forums here are for? I mena, how many pubs does one really need?

Understand, just have to think a bit on it!
*heads down to the pub, just the one!*

hmm, yeah you have a good point there Punt, maybe we could make a nice button clearly visible from any page that will link back here, for the typical no-brain discussion

Or just merge the forums, and host punt's here. They kinda' go together, anyway.
