hey, yea none of you probably know me. I've been working on the same damn map for nearly 4 years (on and off alot). Well, i put in hundreds of hours and i want to show off something now.

i'll probably never use the map, it was just a hobby over time -- heck, it even got me a couple paying gigs making maps for people, but i always used the best for this map. i'm sure you can tell the detail on the entire map from the little "zooms" i put on there.

enjoy, the best parts will remain hidden w/ me. ^_^

Huzzah, dionysis! A true artist creates for the vision itself and not man's accolades! I commend your perseverance. I am just a begginner....sure I can't wheedle a few hints or tips out of you?

Looks great! If you don't end up using it, any thoughts on sharing it? Plenty of people always looking for a good custom map!

nice work!

yeah.. no one said making a map is quick or easy!

But the more time you put into it, the better your world will be. And the more you (and others) will enjoy it.

(turns out i had a username,)

I would take more ingame screens, but i dont even have UO installed anymore.

here's another zoom shot,
www.nrgdrink.com/random/tfr2.jpg

All i can say is that i learned how to do mountain sides w/ tons of experimenting. You can see from the first shot some different ground textures, from very jagged to smooth. Also, i modify the color palette and dragonSP to fit my custom needs (it's very important).

The most important thing is drawing the map with a "feeling." You need to think of an atmosphere you want to create (calm, scary, dangerous, wonderous, etc.) and apply that to your creation.

You can see from my "dragon mountain" in the 2nd image there is alot of slopes up into the mountains that run next to lava and jagged spikes in the sides of the hills. Some paths can only be reach via creative means (boots that walk on lava, or teleport spells) and at the top there is a portal to deep within the mountain.

You need to create a story (or theme) to go along with every part of your map, or there is no point is creating it. If you do not do this, it will turn out like many many of the larger MMORPG's today that have hundreds of square miles of area, but nothing interesting to do.

Nearly every part of my map was checked in game for consistancy with the feeling i wanted to create (like the spiky hillside in the first image)

sorry all those pics have gone down,

Try replacing "nrgdrink" with "intensephysics"

example:

If you don't mind me asking, could you give us a "tools list"? Just a quick run down of what programs you used to do do which parts of the map? I'm looking for a few good programs to add to my toolbox...
