I'm looking for some feedback and comments on my current project, a map based off of Final Fantasy IV. I've got the main maps done, without cities, roads, and dungeons. I just wanted to see if any one had any suggestions before I start cities. Also, if there's interest, I'll post zipped versions of the "natural" map. The overworld is formatted for map0 and the underworld is formatted for map3

Underworld

Looks good other than the "Underworld", did you make the lava tiles sailable? If not that is a lot of open area wasted on lava.

Personally I like "useable" space on my maps, open sea is fine but for something like lava that is a lot of possible dungeon area wasted.

Ever think of making a cave network like the ant hives maybe mixed with shame style dungeons? Perhaps change the water sections into lava and your in business.

Perhaps a nice cluster of adventure spots to start then you can simply patch the others in as your shard grows, something like green acres in the real UO. Just an idea.

Thanks for the comments, Dev. I also thought it was a lot of wasted space, but since I didn't design the world... *shrugs* Overall, I'm not too worried about usable space since only a few people will ever play this version. If anyone else asks for the files, I'll give them to them, and then it's their problem if they want less lava. I'll probably make the lava sailable in any case.

I'm planning on doing a lot of little cave networks for the overworld. If you're familiar with FFIV, stuff like the Mist cave will be built into the mountains (like Minoc's mines), and other dungeons (Magnes cave) will done with teleporters. I've got the whole right side of the map to expand into with dungeons and such, I just haven't gotten around to putting them in the map yet.

Of course, there will also be dungeons for the underworld, but I'll probably put them either in the map0 dungeon area or in another map entirely, depending on space constraints.

on the lava you could also edit the mul and make a new lava tile with water properties so they would be sailable

If you make the lava sailable, you should come up with a pretty good explanation for why the ships sailing on it are made of wood, or else come up with new multis/graphics for the ships (a better idea ? just make them metal-looking).

I like the idea of sailing on lava in some kind of contraption, but I would not want to do so on a wooden ship!

If you are feeling particularly ambitious, you could add a giant balloon with propellers and have airships. That should not be too hard to draw, and then you could just make the ships float above at a constant altitude, with docking towers or something. Just make sure that they cannot walk or jump off them while they are not docked to prevent people from falling through roofs.

People who live in normal houses should not live near air balloon rides?

Well, houses could be near them, but just make sure people can only exit onto the air-dock, and not fall off through a roof. These docks could be pre-built at major cities, or perhaps even player-built, or both.

Another alternative is to have them ?land? ? but this is host to a whole slew of issues regarding where it is or is not valid to land, etc.

hehe, given lava is essentialy liguid rock, not sure I know of any type of material I would want be sailing in it. Much less be near enough to it that is stays molten in mass quantity, pretty sure the heat disapation wouldn't be that pleasant of thing to be around.

Well my theory was going to be that the rising heat could easily keep otherwise too heavy of objects aloft? and thus allow disproportionate airships to fly in the underworld. Being a couple hundred feet or so above the lava should be enough to prevent the melting of metal ships, but you should include a healthy supply of magic-techno stuff like that which is found in FF games just to be safe, and to provide air conditioning.

or you could just build something absolutly rediculous and not worry if it could "really work or not" when you lack a scientific or reasonable explination just say:

"eh... its magic"

Well that was the jyst behind my theory, but having a semi-magic/semi-science reasoning seems more appealing whenever possible.

This was actualy featured in a book, lava ships. Their theory behind it was the simple one: The magic of the race inhabbiting the underground region would also sustain the wooden ships in that heat.

I'm not sure how difficult it is... but apply a blue edge layer to the ship, as if it is shielded, and have it emit a steam effect every now and then. You can see the magic at work then, no more questions asked :)

How about an effect where it bursts into flames and sinks, while the passengers scream in terror?
