I think it was Ryandor's way of determining how popular his boards are without actually asking.

Where would you get that kind of assumption?? How many posts a person makes or even how often has absolutely nothing to do with the account clean-up.

Please re-read the announcement. It states a cleanup of inactive accounts *an account created, but never used*. There are hundereds of accounts created over the years that have never been activated.

The basis of this cleanup was most to blame for a security issue with the phpbb, and spam bots. But more importantly, it has nothing to do with a persons amount of posts or contribution(s) to the site.

I guess OldNGrey wasn't the only one who misunderstood.

I did read the post in news and decided to post in reponse to another topic so I'll join the crowd with OnG and Dian and all the others who posted "just in case".

Haha, That was a joke post of mine. Site admin generally dont have to worry about their account  Just the occasional hard time from the owner now and then.. its a tough job, but its worth it.

Wow, making an entire thread out of this? I'm impressed. :)

I was aware of all the SMTP issues because I was trying to register myself at the time. I even saw a few registrations that had as their name "mail isn't working" or something. I couldn't find an e-mail address to inquire and it was only through a kind hearted registered friend, Yukiko, that I managed to get a message through to activate me.

Let me just say here that I am really glad this site exists. Without it we might be spending our time on our own emulator forums where the mapping experience is nowhere near as good.

How is the deletion of unused accounts being done? If it's a script how could I get a copy of it? I spent an half hour deleting those type accounts earlier on my forums.

Yes, I've not actually gotten around to cleaning up yet... very soon...

It's a script I use for cleanup.
A google search of "phpbb toolkit Starfoxtj" will give you what you need.

I had a hard time finding it so please PM me for a copy of it and important info if you are unable to find a working link for it.

Getting a hold of me without using the forums can be a bit of a challenge. There's a couple of reasons for that:

1: My RYandor@RYANDOR.COM email gets spammed to death so I never check it.

2: I get flooded with requests to make maps for people. I've made it pretty obvious that I no longer create maps due to having to attend to real life. While I would love to devote more time to this, I just do not have the time to devote to it. My sole contribution to the scene at this point is providing a gathering point for all those who want to learn and share.

All that being said, you can email me if you have an issue with something. You would just need to be case sensitive about it.

I appreciate the fact you've kept the site alive too. Your site is THE pre-eminent place for map and MUL issues I think. Most emu sites are not willing to devote space to the issues you do.

I understand about real life (RL). It's certainly the bane of most of us as we get older and get saddled with responsibilities.

Thanks for the info on the clean-up utilities. I am forever deleting those empty members who just create accounts to promote their products or well, you know.

I searched for that utility but it appears the site where it is supposed to be is no longer up. I did find a few anti spam and user deletion mods for PHP BBS however and I'll give them a try to see how they work.

Ryandor like you i've been a diehard phpBB user forever, but a day ago I said enough is enough.

I had 4 different mods (including that one you're talking about) installed to prevent spambots and deal with them, and I still had to delete 2 accounts per hour every single hour to keep the new accounts gone.... and that was within an hour of putting tragena.org online and pointing to a website. Tragena.net used to get way more when it was still valid.

I installed XMB forums yesterday. I haven't had to delete a single spambot account yet. Find yourself a database converter that works from phpBB to anything else, and be happy that all is right and orderly once again in the universe ^_^

VBulletin is a little pricey - but it's a good investment for any long-term forum. It's stable, expandable, and actively developed.

I personally use Invision Power Board, it is another one that is pricey but worth it in the long run.

I still have not gotten one single spam bot account registered. Everyone a valid member so far. I'm really loving xmb 8)

The spambots are an occasional thing for me. I actually don't have any mods install at the moment (unless Dian did something). I think the smtp being broke for almost 2 months may have something to do with it.

As it stands, I never found a decent forum converter that works 100% so I've stuck with this one. Maybe once phpbb3 is officially released I might see if I can update to that.
