I'm looking at a few possibilities for a game server to host my shard on. The game server will also be hosting a low traffic web site/forum. The player base for the shard is small right now but I want to be prepared for future growth (in the range of 100 or so players online peak).

Here are the stats on the 2 servers I am looking at. What will give me a more robust RunUO server (specifically for the forthcoming RunUO 2.0 which I've heard has better support for dual processors, dual core, multithreading, etc.): slower DUAL CPU's, or one faster dual core CPU? Both servers are in close to the same price range. The connection to the net will be a fast wide bandwidth connecion so that shouldn't be an issue.

The servers I am looking at are:

2 X AMD Athlon MP 2600 Processor
2GB Registered PC2100 Memory
2 X 80 GB Hard Drive

or

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Processor (Dual Core)
2 GB DDR RAM
2 x 160 GB SATA Drives

Advice? Pros and cons?

Well dual cores are faster but not quite what people think, they do not actually double the processor power.

http://www.windowsitpro.com/Article/ArticleID/48520/48520.html

This coupled with RUNUO and Windows not being true 64 bit multi threaded and your pretty much stuck...

If your tight on money I would recommend the single dual core with a couple Raptor HD's (due to raw speed) and perhaps some high end ram on a good motherboard. It would be more than enough to run a small UO shard.

Dual core with dual processors would be nice for the future though since the next windows system is supposed to take more advantage of their power.

Perhaps a compromise...a dual socket motherboard with a single dual core installed to see if it performs to your liking, if it does not then you can always try the second processor.

Of course you could go the overkill route and buy a rack server 5U with a backplane for 4 processor cards. :P

I have a 20U and a 52U rack I'm working on filling up, 2-5U bays are already done but they are older units for crunching numbers for various diabolical projects. The next 5U rack will be for a game server of some sort. You can pick up the rack units at Electronic surplus stores brand new, still in the box/plastic for around $150.00 per 5U so its actually pretty cheap to put together.

I'm leasing the servers, so my options are pretty much limited to those 2 configurations.

The next RunUO is supposed to take advantage of 64 bit processing. Will this make the dual core system a better bet?

Either system should be overkill. I'd be more concerned about the amount of bandwidth. Remember when UO first came out? We were running original pentiums then. Sure their servers were each farms of 7 or so servers but they also had like 1k people on each.

The bandwidth won't be an issue. Mainly I want to be sure that the server can handle the web page, forum, and the game server without lagging the server.

come on, man.. are you serious? a web site and forum will hardly efect the shard. Either way you go, your talking about 2 gigs of ram. Most shards out there run great on 1 gig.
You could run a 100 player shard on a 512 system, also running a website and forum, with the right internet connection.. and it would seem outstanding to players.
Either way you go, you will have one damn nice preforming shard.. imho even on up to 500+ players. :)

I agree. Way overkill.

These are the stats of the server I am leasing right now:

AMD Athlon 2200 Processor
1GB Memory
1 x 80 GB Hard Drive

Adequate? I can add another gig of RAM for $30 a month.

Should be fine. If money is no object, sure go for it, otherwise see how it performs and you can always add the RAM when you need it. I assume the website and forum you are going to host there are also for the shard. Traffic on it is going to be minimal and 1 person surfing the site or forum == 1 less person logged onto the shard.

Its not overkill! You can never have enough computer!

I'm getting ready for when UO goes virtual reality. Oh yes...it will come...
