sydius.net port 4000

On Windows XP, go to your start menu, go to "Run" and then type in "telnet" and click OK. A black box will pop up, and you should type the following:

set localecho
o sydius.net 4000

Of course, you can use any MUD/Telnet client you want, and can even log on via IRC.

I could never get the hang of MUD's...tried a few before UO came out and they just didn't feel "natural" to me.

You would think that someone who played pen and paper games for over 20 years would be good at MUD's but for me they to limiting I guess.

GM's hated me most of the time because they would start off each game trying to build the background and story line of the players meeting one another for the first time in the game and I (of course) had to be different...

"I don't want to hang out with them...they look like goat ropers!" Then of course there was the Paladin inncident but lets not dwell on the past...

Perhaps it was the freedom of the pen and paper games that killed MUD's for me. Perhaps that why I loved UO so much when it first came out. Freedom! Go anywhere, do anything and I even had my own tower to stuff full of useless baubles and treasure...they look so shiny in the corner glittering in the candle light...

Yes, that is what attracted me to UO as well. It is still the most interactive MMO I know of.

Anyway, as for MUDs, what appeals to me about them is the freedom, ironically. Or, at least, the potential for freedom. Without graphics, anything can be added at a whim, which is a huge benefit if you want to add something. New monsters, new items, new places -- all can be added without waiting on some artist and without having to learn to do art yourself.

The biggest issue I have with MUDs is the room-based system. I can think of no better way to handle things, though. I do miss graphics, though.

I will set up a POL server on the dedicated server as well, if anybody would like to play on it. :-) I did once before, but nobody played on it (maybe because I never told anybody).

 You mean... you won't use UOX3!?!? Or RunUO!?!?

Although, if you didn't tell anyone about it last time, that might explain why no one logged in...

Yeah, I wonder what was up with that. I think they must have been attacked (DoS or something), since my server was in the same state it was in right before we lost connection. Bah, somebody probably tripped over the cord. That is the first time I have had a problem, but maybe I should start monitoring it for uptime.

Oh, and every time I tried to cast a spell, you had already killed whatever I was after. :-P

Now open on sydius.net:5001 using "CircleMUD With Goodies". I picked it randomly. It seems simpler and less-fleshed-out than the last one... but less bugs, too.

Anyone bored enough is welcome. Up 24/7.

Now it is just CircleMUD... removed the "Goodies" because they seem buggy. I prefer vanilla with no bugs. It is rather... simple. :-P

Gah. All MUDs suck. Not because they are MUDs, but because people like to use them to learn how to program, when, in fact, they really are too complicated for that.

Actually back in 97 I had a program that taught you how to program in C++ by making MUD's. It came with the basic engine and you filled in the content.

Of course the next year was when 3d engines started really being released and I sort of wandered off...and have since wandered away from those as well...attention span isn't what it used to .......OOO! A pretty butterfly!

Right. And thus the plethora of badly-coded MUDs.
