Hi everyone, again I hear that we are all hoping that there will be
a sequal to this amazing game. Well to quash all the rumours I'd like
to say that there is an Ultima X and I have the beta copy. How did I
get it? Well I'm glad you asked here's the story.

Well the other day i was just browsing through my ususal news groups
and while talking about a whole host of things in
alt.sex.fetish.cyborgs I came across this guy who started talking
about Ultima. "Wow!" I thought. A guy that plays Ultima here? Though
he was a bit of a newbie cause he hadn't heard of the Underworlds. But
he's pretty hardcore he tells me that he has beaten every Ultima he
has ever played in under a day the first time he ever played them. He
also said he did it without cheating or hintbooks. I thought he must
be one of the best Ultima players in the world. I asked how can one be
as good as he and how did he become so good.

He told me he was the lead project designer for Ultima and that's why
he knew a lot of details about the game. That made a lot of sense to
me as after all who else would know. And while trying to ask him how I
can be as good as he, we got on the topic of Ultima X and he told me
that it was coming out real soon!!!! In fact he ask if I wanted to be
a beta tester as he had a copy of the game to give me!!! I asked how
could he send me the file it must be huge, he told me that it was in a
super zip format, as that's how they give games to beta testers as it
cost too much to give them a cd each. Fair enough I thought. But he
told me that the super zip wasn't released to the public as it had
problems with virus scanners so i had to turn my scanner off. Fair
enough i always do that when installing. And so I installed the 2 MB
program but the computer went blank and froze so I had to restart
(this always happens as im using windows 95 and the guy said it was
beta so it might hang) but funnily enough all my data was gone like my
drive was refomated. (must have been one of those major crashes
windows does now and again) So I reinstalled and tried again but same
thing a happened, what a fluke hey to have such a rare crash happen
twice!!! But any way I'll tell you all about it when my comupter
finally stops crashing but I have the beta so Ultima X is coming!!!!!!

Well, they could make an Ultima X, I suppose. EA bought all the rights to everything "Ultima", except the name "Lord British"... I doubt they ever would, though, considering how they treated Ultima IX.

Anyhoo, I think the guy is lucky, since he obviously got a virus and not an actual EA product. I think the damage could have been far worse if he had actually gotten a copy of it. :-P

On a similar subject, I get to test Tabula Rasa (the game "Lord British" is working on now). :-D It was supposed to be released a year ago, and will probably not be released for another year. They practically finished the game, and then decided they did not like it, so they threw all of the artwork out, redesigned huge chunks of it, and basically started over. What a nice change from EA's "release it too soon, especially if it is crap" philosophy. I'll let you all know what it is like when my computer stops crashing (and I actually get it). ;-)

They scrapped Ultima X, that is why you have the new graphics in Mondain's Legacy, etc.

Lol, plus why would someone who is a lead designer be in a wierd screwed up channel?

I remember something being posted on a gaming site about Ultima X which stated they were not working on it and that the "Game" everyone is passing around was in fact a virus...that was months ago.

Well, waaay before that, there was a real Ultima X, but it was dubbed UO 2. Just do a search on google and you'll find some old alpha screens and maybe even some features on it.

Of course, when EA bought out Origin, it all went to shit, and thus UO2 was scrapped. Thus when you look in the 3d models of UO: ML, those were the creatures that were developed for UO2. Even the Juka and Meer which are there were for UO2.

So they did recycle the information, but if EA had never bought out Origin, I think UO2 would be very much alive and out there right now.

Oh well, just shows you that it isn't the love of creating a game, it is just the lure of the $$$ that companies want, instead of specific games that people would find interesting to play.

LBR was the first step into the pitfall EA dug... at least the first big comercial realease of it. I mean, whoever decided to make Blackthorn into some mechanical monster dosed too many hits that day.. and Golems.. what the hell.. they should have been shot at that point.

A few corrections -

EA has owned Origin since around the time Ultima VII Part 2 came out. So EA originated UO, and then originated and then scrapped UO2, and later originated and then scrapped Ultima X (which was an entirely seperate online game), entirely on their own. If memory serves, EA pretty much dismantled Origin as a company following the cancellation of UO2, moving the remaining developers to EA Corporate in California, and now Origin is pretty much just a brand name.

The UO2 graphics ended up in LBR, not ML. That's why we ended up with the Meer, Juka, "Robo-Blackthorn", and all the other Todd McFarlane created nonsense. Most. Horrible. 2D Graphics. Ever. The ML graphics are a huge improvement over those.

EA owned Origin at the time of UO, but I would still say it was definitely an "OSI project" since EA was very skeptical of the silly idea of having an online RPG. So far as I know, they left the development of UO alone as a side-project of OSI and were more worried about Ultima VIII and Ultima IX (which they thought would be far better).

Is Origin really even a brand name? According to the lead UO server programmer, the word "Origin" is dead forever -- there is no longer an Origin company, an Origin team, or even an Origin brand. The vast majority of the former Origin employers quit or were fired (and now work at Destination Games, Richard's new company), and they call the people who work on UO the "UO Team" now. I assume it is so that EVERYBODY knows EA made UO, and not somebody else.

Yeah UO 2 flopped a long time ago, I still have the downloaded background pages and I think I even have the video some where too.

The programmers were having to many problems from what I heard. Yes! They were the worst UO graphic additions in 3d but they are ok in 2d I think.

Well, the creatures aren't too bad, it is the player graphics.

Oh well, at least we've got a bit of a larger variety of graphics for our servers. :P

It's still under trademark and I think they still use it for UO? Not sure. But yeah, it's pretty much dead, the Borg...er, I mean EA has absorbed them.

Ya there is its UO2. your right. but they scratched the product in beta and developed Everquest. perhaps you have the beta. it was open. ive never played it. its possible they would make an ultima x but i doubt it would be for a while. after OSI dies they might bring back the name for cash.

That would be an amazing feat since I beta tested Everquest almost 2 years "Before" UO2 was announced.

It would be even more amazing than that since they are owned by two seperate, competing companies.
