Map Generator 2 XML Converter for Mul2Bmp v1.0 by HellRazor
(Map Generator 2 and Mul2Bmp written by punt)

REQUIREMENTS:

Microsoft .NET Framework
Map Generator 2
Mul2Bmp

DESCRIPTION:

The Mul2Bmp program by punt was originally written for UO Landscaper. It reads an Ultima Online map file (Map0.mul) and produces altitude.bmp and terrain.bmp image files for UO Landscaper.

Later, punt wrote a program similar to UO Landscaper called Map Generator 2. The xml files for Map Generator 2 are different than those for UO Landscaper, and the color tables are different.

The purpose of my utility is to read Map Generator 2 altitude.xml and terrain.xml files; and produce altitude.xml and terrain.xml files that are compatible with Mul2Bmp so that you can use Mul2Bmp to create altitude and terrain image files for Map Generator 2.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Extract all files.
2. Run Mul2BmpXMLConverter.exe. Press "Convert altitude.xml" or "Convert terrain.xml".
3. When prompted, open your Map Generator 2 altitude.xml or terrain.xml for reading.
4. When prompted, save the converted altitude.xml or terrain.xml. NOTE: These should be placed in your Mul2Bmp directory as "altitude.xml" or "terrain.xml". Be careful not to accidentally overwrite your Map Generator 2 xmls!
5. Run Mul2Bmp to create your Map Generator 2 image files!

KNOWN ISSUES:

1. Mul2Bmp does not seem to work with the larger Map0.mul files from Mondain's Legacy. It does support the old smaller Map0.mul as well as Map2 (Ilshenar), Map3 (Malas), and Map4 (Tokuno).

2. This program was designed to work with the default Map Generator 2 XML files. Making changes to the attributes in these files (especially to the "Name" and "Tile" attributes in terrain.xml) might cause problems with the conversion.

3. There is very little error checking in the program. Needless to say, if you try to read an incompatible file, the program will probably crash.

4. The altitude.bmp files produced by Mul2Bmp are in whatever colors are specified as "Other" terrain in the altitude.xml file. The terrain types are not seperated by color, Mul2Bmp treats the entire map as "Other" terrain. This seems to be a shortcoming of Mul2Bmp. The altitude.bmp file will work fine in Map Generator 2, it just won't have the terrain types seperated by color, and so may be more difficult to edit in your paint program.

P.S. The Mul2Bmp program is included in the archive, so you don't need to go hunting for it.
