Ok, I'm completly confused on making my own map, and there are no tutorials to help me. So I have one question. What program should I use for the 8-bit .bmp file? I am currently using Paint, but I can only have 24-bit .bmp files with it.

Also, please try to get the tutorials back up soon Ryandor.

Sincerely,

Dune Masters

Easy Probleme, go Here and download Ultimate FX, with this, you will be able to transfer a 24 bit bmp to 256 color. ( 8 bit )

Even better, download a better image editor. For free (legal) use, I recommend GIMP. Then you need to do the following before you start drawing:
1) select a program for the build, Ryandor hosts Dragon and the new Worldbuilder
2) select a palette to color your map
3) open a new image (Dragon supports the old size of 6144x4096, Worldbuilder supports any size you throw at it) and index it to your palette

I know have my map0.mul file. I just used Dragon since this won't be my real map. Now I just need help being able to edit my map in World Forge. So I'm trying to figure out how to use the "WF-Diff" thing in World Forge.

Okay I've got a problem with this 8-Bit thingie, too.
I first load the swatches from mapgenerator into my GIMP colour palette. Then I switched Mode to RGB and draw my map.
After that I converted it into indicated and use my mapgens palette for converting.
Okay so far I thought everything would be right - but WRONG! When I started the mapgenerator and load my 16mb big .bmp he just tell me that the .bmp has got to be in an 8-Bit format...
So I read this thread and thought "Yeah have to convert it with 256 colours", so I did and tried again - but WRONG again, same message, same shit....
Well, I really spend hours in my third map and was so careful that I did everything right... Now I want this *%~$# map to be my playable Ingame map!!!!
Please help me, what did I wrong?

You should never have switched to RGB mode. The starting terrain.bmp, that mapgenerator makes for you, is 8 bit indexed. That format should never be changed.

One should take that image (the one that mapgenrator made), should be the one you edit to make how you want. then use that to generate your altitude image, and edit again (same rules apply).

Okay... My fault was to use the map making manual from mogbert and that is for dragon...
But what should I do with my current map?
I'll never get another one as best as this one. Is there a way to copy it?
