I was curious, as I plan to do a new Transition/Art editor (to replace the one currently available for Map Generator), if there is a lot of people with integrated video chip sets. In particular SIS chip sets.

The next version plans to have a small OpenGL widget, that although not taxing, will require reasonable OpenGL drivers (one can't use the windows ones). That isn't an issue for any nvidia or ATI users. I am not sure about ATI, but I do know SIS does not ship with any (and therefore the windows defaults are used, which are software rendered and horribly out of date)

One of my laptops has SIS chipset.. not sure which though.. I thought it did DX ok though.. I'll look at it later and let you know.

yea, SIS does DirectX/3d ok. But it doesn't ship with openGL drivers.

So openGL usually looks terrible (it has a constant flicker, and is slow)


But you have other means as well, correct?

I plan on going to OpenGL, to be able to show in the transition editor, the terrain stretched as it would in the client. So one can see in the editor, what their transition and each entry(with altitude modifieres) would look like.

Remember that Win Vista won't/doesn't have native OpenGL support. This just means an extra download (possibly), but...

I'm in the same boat as Ry, my laptop has SIS, but my desktop (where I do most real work) is nVidia.

yes, but I don't plan on doing Vista. I don't really have another choice, as I don't plan on doing tools that I can't really run (OpenGL works fine on my Mac/Linux). DirectX/Direct3d are not viable options for me. My windows machine is delegated mainly to do a compile for these builds, after I do most of the development on my Mac.

"Real" OpenGL drivers are seperate today. They come with your video card drivers. I recognize Vista may make it difficult to run opengl applications when using Aero. They are talking about mapping OpenGL to direct3d/x. Will have to wait and see, as many CAD programs are still openGL based.

Just have to wait and see, but vista isn't a determing factor for me.

So I either have to use the QT native draw, or OpenGL (which for texture stretching, OpenGL is easier and far faster).

Ahh... Good reasoning. Like I said, it just means an extra download for the poor saps that use Vista. I'm a Linux/Win2k guy myself, so it makes very little difference to me.
