lets say I want to make new terrain types,

Example, I want desert savanas, wasteland forests, sand dunes, etc.

How do I add these to the palette for map generator 2 to use?

You'll need to add the new terrain types to terrain.xml, and then you'll need to create transitions for them.

But they aren't terrains they are just sand with different statics definitions Why do they need transitions cant' I just copy them from sand

Give this a try:
Have a look at each entry in terrain.xml.
eg the lines that describe the desert terrain.
It's easiest to edit an existing line that you don't mind losing, but if you want a whole new colour to select an added style, then give this a try:

Add a new line after the sand definitions in terrain.xml
You might try giving it an ImgIndex of "84". You might call it ArtKey="Savannah" and set aside a unique palette colour of your choice with the Red=, Green=, Blue= definitions. Add in Adjust= if you like.

If you define a new ArtKey then you will have to create a new file in the data\artdefinition directory by the same name - in this example called Savannah.xml. Use Beach.xml as a guide as to what density and type of items you want placed.

As for editing the transitions xml files, I am not sure. Have to try it first and see if the results are wrong. As you say, it's just sand terrain art and the existing transitions could work unless you need to index to them in some way.

I haven't tried adding a new terrain style, but I guess it would be interesting to see if it worked - use mapgenerator2 to create a swatch with your additions to terrain.xml and the new artdefinitions files, and see if an extra colour appears in the swatch.


For sanddunes you can only achieve part of what you want with the Adjust=. You are better off painting in altitude to get dunes because the Adjust= only cause unevenness in adjacent tiles, not over a wider area that a dune would cover.
