Screenshots to follow at a later time, and this is a rough draft in need of editing.

With mod10/11 it is now possible to make a mountains that look like OSI's. My technique is to first draw out my rough mountain area. Generally with the lasso tool, then feathering/smoothing the selection a bit. After that fill with the lowest mountain color (5) as always. Then contract your selection by one pixel. Select the next mountain color (10)

Now here is where we do something different than previous methods. Instead of doing a fill we are going to use the airbrush tool, I like to choose a nice large brush, like round 300. We want to be in dissolve mode (although I have to try the others, I know if you leave it in normal mode it won't work properly), and with a pressure of between 25-50%. Now go ahead and spray all through the selected area. Contract selection again, go up to next color (15) and spray again. Contain contracting and spraying with the next higher color all the way through 40 at least (I like 50). If your mountain range is surrounded by other terrain of a level higher than 0 then you want to increase your starting and ending colors by that amount.

I have reversengineered the mountains off the OSI map with a modified map2bmp transtable and this technique produces nearly the same results as what I get from that. It needs a little perfection, but it produces good results.

Easy,

Do the fill and contractons in reverse and do the final fill with Grass, forest or swamp (or what ever else you like). I do this to make the valleys in my mountain ranges all the time and it works great.

AHHHHHHHHHHHH!
I didn't see what you guys were talking about at first.
Great idea Dev. I can't believe I never thought to try that. Usually I try to plan out where I am going to make passes and valleys first and THEN do the mountain fine detail.
That saves a lot of aggravation though, because a lot of the time I decide I want to change things later.
